FAO working with partners for improved fish safety, quality and market access

International seafood trade, worth over US$128 billion, is an ever-growing industry with major markets, like the European Union, USA and Japan, accounting for over 65% of imports. As global demand for fish products continues to increase to meet population growth and dietary changes, so do market opportunities – especially for exporting countries.

This week's 10th World Seafood Congress aims to highlight innovation in seafood and provide opportunities for maximum participation by all economies involved in seafood trade – including developing countries.

The World Seafood Congress, co-organized by FAO and UNIDO (the Industrial Development Organization of the United Nations), with the International Association of Fish Inspectors (IAFI) and Marine Institute of Canada, is the global forum to promote such an exchange. This year’s event, Creative Solutions for Global Challenges, will feature sessions on food safety and inspections modernization, seafood sustainability, seafood innovation, profitable seafood markets and global export and trade.

Margarita Lizárraga Medal 2014-2015

In 1997 the FAO Conference instituted the Margarita Lizárraga Medal to be awarded every two years to a person or organization that has served with distinction in the application of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The Medal pays tribute to Ms Margarita Lizárraga, Senior Fishery Liaison Officer, for her decisive role in promoting the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries for her productive work in the field of fisheries for almost forty years, for her great dedication to FAO and for her strong commitment towards fostering the promotion of the fisheries sector, especially in developing countries.

Nominations are now open for candidates for the 2014-2015 Margarita Lizárraga Medal Award. Any person or organization may propose a person or organization that has diligently applied the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. Winners are selected based on an outstanding, practical hands-on contribution to the application of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries demonstrating a tangible output; the activity should be a sustained effort, and not a one–off initiative; and the output should have the potential for a catalytic effect.

Submissions must be made on the specific electronic nomination form, which can be obtained from the FAO website to the Secretary, Committee on Fisheries.

Proposals for nominations should be submitted by 31 March 2014.

Axis 4 in a nutshell: a "pocket guide"

A new, user-friendly leaflet is now available, which summarises the key messages contained in the recently published FARNET Guide n° 7, “Axis 4: a tool in the hands of fisheries communities”. The leaflet explains the main features of Axis 4 and how it can be used to help fishermen, their families and communities. It provides a simple way for FLAGs and other stakeholders to better understand Axis 4, and to be better able to communicate its benefits within their community. The leaflet is available in 14 languages and will be distributed at all major FARNET events in the coming months. To order copies for distribution, please contact the FARNET Support Unit.

Push to enhance management and conservation in tuna fisheries on the high seas

Global Environment Facility (GEF) CEO Naoko Ishii today approved a project coordinated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to improve the health and sustainability of tuna fisheries worldwide by reducing illegal catch and supporting related marine ecosystems and species.
