Small-scale fisheries traditionally represent an important share of the fisheries sector in the Mediterranean and Black Sea and their considerable role in the region has long been recognized. Now, building on the process and participatory approach used to develop the
International Guidelines on Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries, the
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) plans to provide a platform to address the main issues related to small-scale fisheries in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
The GFCM and FAO, in partnership with CIHEAM Bari, MedPAN and WWF, are organizing a symposium in November that will serve as a building block to steer strategic and programmatic actions with a view to improving the livelihoods of local communities engaged in small-scale fisheries in the region.
